Chapter 2 - The Hidden Surveillance

The breath caught entirely in my throat as his terrifying words echoed in my mind.
Before I could even ask him to explain, the medics gently pushed me aside to administer an emergency intravenous line.
I stood up slowly, the freezing rain soaking through my expensive trench coat.
My so-called family was currently being shoved facedown onto the wet grass and tightly bound with heavy zip ties.
Captain Whitmore, a towering man with cold gray eyes, approached me and offered a crisp salute.
"The perimeter is entirely secure, Commander, but we found something highly disturbing underneath the property."
I followed him past the trembling bodies of my supposed parents and walked behind the rotting shed.
Concealed beneath a pile of muddy tarps was a heavy steel trapdoor that looked like a military bunker entrance.
Whitmore handed me a heavy tactical flashlight before we descended the concrete stairs into the darkness.
The air grew cold and smelled strongly of ozone and running computer servers.
At the bottom of the stairs, I kicked open a heavy security door and stepped into a massive surveillance hub.
Dozens of high-resolution monitors illuminated the dark room with a sinister, glowing blue light.
My stomach violently twisted when I realized what was playing on the screens.
There was a live feed of my private apartment in the city, a hidden camera in my car, and even audio logs from my encrypted work phone.
"They have been tracking your every single movement for over a decade," Whitmore stated grimly.
Suddenly, a loud series of gunshots erupted from the front yard, echoing loudly into the bunker.
I drew my standard issue sidearm and sprinted back up the concrete stairs as fast as I could.

When I burst out into the pouring rain, I saw three of my tactical operators lying motionless on the ground.
A fleet of unmarked black SUVs had just crashed through the perimeter, unloading heavily armed mercenaries who were now pointing rocket launchers directly at us.
