Chapter 3 - The Peso Promissory Note

I stared at the threatening text message, my heart pounding against my ribs.

The 5.4 million peso promissory note I had found in Andrew's briefcase last month suddenly made terrifying sense.

It wasn't just a bad business loan from a legitimate bank in Mexico.

He had borrowed money from a dangerous cartel front pretending to be a venture capital firm.

And he had used his own daughters as the collateral guarantors without my knowledge.

I immediately forwarded the text message to my private security team.

"I need armed guards at the penthouse doors and a full sweep of the building," I ordered my head of security.

I pulled the physical copy of the promissory note from my hidden wall safe.

Andrew's signature was scrawled hastily at the bottom of every page.

He had traded our family's safety for a chance to look like a big shot to his mother.

My phone rang, displaying Andrew's name on the caller ID.

I answered it, putting him on speakerphone.

"Lauren, you need to tell me where you are right now," Andrew demanded, his voice laced with panic.

"You have no right to demand anything from me," I replied coldly.

"You do not understand, there are people looking for me, and they will come after you," he pleaded.

I looked at the promissory note on my desk.

"You mean the men from Jalisco who hold your 5.4 million peso debt?" I asked.

There was a dead, horrifying silence on the other end of the line.

"How do you know about that?" Andrew whispered.

"I know everything, Andrew, including the shell companies you opened in Sophia and Chloe's names," I said.

He let out a pathetic, desperate sob.

"Lauren, I had to do it to keep up appearances, my mother expects greatness from me," he cried.

"Your mother expects sons, and you gave her fraud," I shot back.

Suddenly, the sound of breaking glass echoed through Andrew's end of the phone call.

Men were shouting in Spanish in the background.

"They are here, Lauren, please help me!" Andrew screamed.

A loud gunshot rang out, followed by a heavy thud.

Then, an unfamiliar voice picked up Andrew's phone and spoke directly to me.

"We have your husband, Mrs. Vance, and you have exactly twenty-four hours to pay his debt."
