Chapter 2 - The Shell Game

The drive back to our real home in Atlanta took several hours.
My daughters fell asleep in the back seat, exhausted from the emotional toll of the evening.
I used the quiet time to make a phone call to my lead attorney, Marcus.
"The Vance family gathering went exactly as you predicted," I told him over the secure Bluetooth connection.
Marcus sighed heavily on the other end of the line.
"I assume Patricia pulled her usual stunt with the food," he said.
"She did, but it is the last time she will ever disrespect my children," I replied.
I instructed Marcus to initiate the divorce proceedings immediately.
For eleven years, I had hidden my wealth to protect Andrew's fragile ego.
I had built Vance & Horizon Capital from the ground up, turning it into a billion-dollar empire.
Andrew thought I was just a lowly assistant showing cheap apartments on the weekends.
He never realized that I owned every single apartment building I showed.
"We need to freeze the joint accounts before Andrew realizes what is happening," Marcus advised.
I agreed and hung up the phone just as the sun began to rise.
We arrived at a luxury penthouse in downtown Atlanta that I had secretly purchased a year ago.
It was a safe haven, far away from Andrew and Patricia's toxic influence.
I tucked the girls into their new, plush beds and kissed their foreheads.
When I walked into my home office, my laptop was already flashing with an urgent alert.
Marcus had sent an encrypted file marked with high priority.
I opened the document and felt my blood run ice cold.
Andrew had not just drained our joint checking account of its measly five thousand dollars.
He had used Sophia and Chloe's social security numbers to open offshore shell companies in the Cayman Islands.
My husband had committed massive identity theft against our own minor daughters.
I frantically scrolled through the financial statements attached to the shell companies.
Millions of dollars in illicit funds were flowing through my children's names.

My phone suddenly buzzed with a text message from an unknown international number.
"Tell your husband his time is up, and we are coming to collect."
