Chapter 1 - The Exit

The gravel crunched beneath my heels as I carried Chloe toward the parking lot.

Sophia held tightly to my left hand, her small fingers trembling slightly in the cool Virginia night.

I did not look back at the grand estate that Andrew was currently pretending to own.

My husband’s angry footsteps echoed behind us, growing louder and more aggressive with every second.

"Lauren, stop walking away from me!" Andrew shouted into the darkness.

I ignored him, keeping my eyes focused on the distant line of parked cars.

He grabbed my shoulder and spun me around roughly.

Chloe whimpered and buried her face in the crook of my neck.

"You are embarrassing me in front of the most important investors of my career," Andrew hissed.

I looked at the hand on my shoulder and then up into his furious eyes.

"Take your hand off me, Andrew, or I will break it," I said with absolute calm.

He laughed a bitter, condescending laugh.

"You are going to break my hand?" he mocked.

"You are a part-time real estate assistant who cannot even afford the gas to drive home."

He pointed back toward the brightly lit mansion where his mother was holding court.

"Get back inside, apologize to my mother, and sit where you belong."

I stepped back, effectively breaking his grip.

"We are leaving, and we are never coming back to that house," I told him.

I pulled a sleek black key fob from my purse and pressed the unlock button.

A customized armored Mercedes Maybach flashed its headlights from the VIP parking section.

Andrew stared at the half-million-dollar vehicle in utter confusion.

"Whose car is that?" he asked, his voice losing its arrogant edge.

I opened the rear door and gently placed Chloe inside.

Sophia climbed in right behind her, buckling her seatbelt without saying a word.

"It is mine," I replied, opening the driver's side door.

Before Andrew could formulate a response, his cell phone began to ring frantically.

He answered it, his eyes still glued to my vehicle.

"What do you mean the property owner is terminating the rental agreement right now?" Andrew yelled into the phone.

I started the engine, the powerful motor purring smoothly.

"Because the owner is selling the estate tonight," the venue manager's voice echoed through the phone's speaker.

Andrew cursed loudly.

"Who the hell bought it out from under me?" he demanded.

I rolled down my window and smiled at the man I had married.

"I did," I said softly before driving away into the night.
