Chapter 9 - The Rescue Mission

I screamed Lily's name into the phone, but the line went completely dead.
Harold didn't hesitate for a single second.
He ordered Marcus and the entire private security team to mobilize immediately.
They grabbed their weapons, loaded into three black SUVs, and sped toward the suburbs.
I sat on the edge of the sofa, my entire body shaking with a terrifying, primal fear.
Harold sat beside me, holding my hand tightly and promising me that his men would not fail.
I realized that crying wouldn't save my granddaughter, but my skills as an accountant could.
I opened my laptop and accessed the deep, encrypted files I had hidden from Daniel years ago.
I knew exactly how Victor Vance operated, because Thomas and I had studied his illegal financial structures thirty years ago.
I logged into the international banking portals, using backdoors I had built during my career.
I found the massive, hidden accounts where Victor stored his laundered money.
With a few keystrokes, I triggered a catastrophic financial freeze on every single asset his syndicate possessed.
I initiated a sequence that would automatically forward all the illegal ledgers to the FBI cyber division in one hour.
Ten minutes later, Marcus called Harold with the best news I had ever heard.
The security team had breached the house, neutralized the cartel thugs, and safely secured Lily.
I wept openly, thanking God that my beautiful granddaughter was finally out of danger.
But the nightmare wasn't completely over yet.
My cell phone rang again, displaying a blocked, international number.

I answered the phone, and the cold, smooth voice of Victor Vance echoed in my ear.
He told me to undo the financial freeze, or he would personally hunt down everyone I loved.
