Chapter 8 - The Desperate Extraction

Julian stepped closer, the silencer of his weapon gleaming menacingly in the morning sunlight.
He mocked Elena for thinking a cartel auditor could outsmart a man who built the entire network.
Clara backed slowly toward the heavy oak desk, her mind racing to find any possible weapon to defend herself.
Julian cocked the pistol, stating that he was going to enjoy explaining to the bosses how Elena died in a tragic home invasion.
Before he could pull the trigger, the massive front window of the living room completely shattered.
The deafening sound of a heavy vehicle crashing through the brick facade shook the entire foundation of the house.
Julian flinched, instinctively turning his weapon toward the hallway as the house alarm began screaming violently.
I had driven my heavy SUV straight through the manicured flowerbeds and directly into his living room.
Brenda leaped out of the passenger seat, kicking the remaining glass away with her heavy tactical boots.
She raised her service weapon, moving through the dust and debris with the precision of a seasoned SWAT commander.
Julian fired a wild shot toward the hallway, but it buried itself harmlessly into the drywall.
Brenda returned fire immediately, shattering the wooden doorframe inches from Julian's head and forcing him to dive for cover.
Clara didn't freeze in the chaos.
She lunged forward, snatching the leather-bound ledger from the open safe before Julian could grab it.
She grabbed Lily from the adjacent hallway, carrying her terrified child through the dust toward my wrecked vehicle.
I pulled Clara and Lily into the backseat of my car while Brenda provided covering fire.
I screamed for Elena to follow us, offering the stranger a chance to survive the madness.
Elena sprinted toward the car, but Julian recovered his footing and aimed carefully.
A sharp crack echoed through the house, and Elena collapsed onto the ruined carpet with a gasp.
Brenda grabbed my collar and dragged me back, shouting that we couldn't save her now.
We threw the car in reverse, tearing out of the ruined living room and speeding down the quiet Georgetown streets.
We drove in terrified silence until we reached a secluded safehouse Brenda had secured outside the city.
Once the doors were locked, Clara placed the stolen ledger on the kitchen table with shaking hands.
Brenda opened the thick book, expecting to find a list of corrupted cops and cartel drop points.
Instead, she stopped on the very first page, her face draining of all color.
She turned the book toward me with trembling hands.

The primary account holder for the entire money laundering syndicate wasn't Julian.
It was a man named Arthur Vance, which was the exact name of my deceased husband.
