Chapter 1 - The Morning After

The silence in my kitchen was heavier than the freezing Georgetown rain beating against the windows.

Clara sat frozen at the island, her trembling hands wrapped around a mug of coffee she hadn't touched for hours.

The dark bruise on her cheekbone had bloomed into a sickening shade of violet overnight.

Lily was still asleep upstairs in the guest room, exhausted from the terror of the previous evening.

I placed my hand gently over Clara's, trying to anchor her back to reality.

She looked up at me with hollow, defeated eyes that belonged to a stranger.

I asked her gently how Julian managed to drain an entire trust fund without her getting a single bank alert.

Clara swallowed hard, her throat bobbing as if the words were made of broken glass.

She confessed that Julian had forced her to sign a stack of financial documents on their anniversary under the guise of buying a vacation home.

He didn't just drain Lily's future.

He had secretly taken out three massive collateral loans against my house, forging my signature as a guarantor.

If we made one wrong move, he wouldn't just take her daughter.

He was going to leave us entirely homeless by the end of the month.

A sharp, violent knock at the front door made both of us jump out of our skin.

I motioned for Clara to stay put while I walked cautiously into the foyer.

Through the peephole, I expected to see Brenda returning with the legal paperwork we had discussed.

Instead, the porch was swarming with flashing red and blue police lights.

Two uniformed officers stood on my welcome mat with their hands resting on their utility belts.

Julian was standing right behind them, wearing a perfectly tailored suit and a mask of absolute distress.

I cracked the door open just a few inches, leaving the heavy chain engaged.

The lead officer looked at me with a stern, unforgiving expression.

He stated that they were there to execute an emergency court order.

Julian stepped forward, wiping a fake tear from his eye as he played the role of a devastated father perfectly.

He told the police that his mentally unstable wife had kidnapped his daughter in the middle of the night.

The officer handed me a signed judge's warrant demanding the immediate return of the child.

May you like

Julian leaned in close to the crack in the door, his eyes completely dead and devoid of any human emotion.

He whispered that I should have minded my own business.
