Chapter 3 - The Offshore Secret

I stared at the glowing screen of the burner phone until the words blurred together.

Julian wasn't just a domestic abuser throwing his weight around a suburban kitchen.

He was incredibly calculated, planting this phone to ensure his terrifying ultimatum bypassed any legal monitoring.

I immediately called Brenda, reading the chilling text message aloud to her.

Brenda told me to put the phone in a plastic bag to preserve fingerprints and promised she was already pulling strings at the precinct.

While we waited, Clara and I sat at the dining table, attempting to untangle the financial nightmare Julian had created.

Clara logged into her banking portal, her hands shaking violently over the keyboard.

We stared at the transaction history of Lily's trust fund, which should have held nearly half a million dollars.

The balance was zero.

The money hadn't been slowly drained through gambling or extravagant purchases like we originally assumed.

It had been wiped out in three massive wire transfers over a single weekend.

I squinted at the routing numbers, realizing they belonged to an obscure offshore holding company in the Cayman Islands.

Brenda arrived at my house thirty minutes later, slamming the front door behind her.

She threw a manila folder onto the kitchen island, her face pale and drawn.

I asked her what she had found out about the bank transfers.

Brenda explained that she ran the holding company's name through a federal database used by her old narcotics unit.

The shell company wasn't registered to Julian Vance.

It was a front used by a highly organized money laundering syndicate operating out of the Eastern seaboard.

Clara gasped, finally realizing that the man she married was entirely a fabrication.

Brenda looked at me with an expression of pure, unadulterated dread.

She said she dug deeper into the syndicate's known associates to find the link to Julian.

Brenda slid a printed photograph out of the folder and pushed it across the granite counter.

It was a surveillance photo of Julian handing a heavy briefcase to an older man in a dimly lit parking garage.

I recognized the older man instantly.

It was Detective Marcus Thorne, Brenda's former police partner and the godfather to her children.
