Chapter 6 - The Replacement

I wanted to slam my foot on the gas pedal and drive my SUV straight through the living room window.

Instead, I watched helplessly as Julian closed the front door, cutting off my view of my daughter's personal hell.

I dialed Brenda's number, but it went straight to a sterile automated voicemail.

She was likely tied up at the crime scene, completely unable to help me while Clara was trapped inside.

I parked my car a block away, hiding in the shadows of the large oak trees lining the wealthy Georgetown street.

Inside the house, Clara was living a psychological nightmare designed specifically to break her mind.

I learned later that Julian introduced the strange woman simply as Elena, a business associate who would be staying with them indefinitely.

Elena didn't just wear Clara's clothes; she commanded the house as if she had lived there her entire life.

She ordered Clara to prepare dinner, treating my daughter like an unpaid servant in her own home.

Julian watched the entire twisted dynamic from his leather armchair, completely intoxicated by the absolute power he yielded.

Lily remained terrified and silent, clinging to Clara's pant leg whenever Elena wasn't forcing her to play games.

When it was finally time for bed, Julian informed Clara that she would be sleeping in the windowless basement from now on.

He escorted Elena up the main staircase, leaving Clara standing alone in the dark kitchen with her tears.

Clara quietly washed the dinner plates, trying to formulate any kind of escape plan that wouldn't get Lily killed.

Suddenly, a shadow detached itself from the pantry doorway.

Elena stepped quietly into the kitchen, looking entirely different without Julian watching her.

The arrogant, cruel smirk was completely gone from her face.

She moved with incredible speed, grabbing Clara by the shoulders and pushing her out of view of the hallway security cameras.

Clara braced herself for a physical attack, squeezing her eyes shut in anticipation of the pain.

Instead, Elena shoved a small, folded piece of paper directly into Clara's sweaty palm.

Elena placed a finger over her lips, demanding absolute silence before slipping back up the stairs like a ghost.

Clara retreated to the cold, damp basement and turned on the single overhead bulb to read the note.

Her hands shook as she unfolded the heavy parchment paper.

The handwritten message was brief, frantic, and completely unbelievable.

It read that she needed Clara's help to find the ledger, because she was planning to kill Julian too.
