Chapter 5 - The Fugitive

I gripped the plastic receiver of the payphone, feeling the blood drain completely from my face.

Julian was framing me for the very financial crimes he and Vanessa had committed.

If the police found me now, I would be arrested and locked in a jail cell while they finalized the theft.

"Marcus, you have to initiate the counter-documents immediately," I whispered urgently into the phone.

"The trap we set is the only thing that can stop them from taking my father's house."

Marcus let out a heavy, defeated sigh that made my stomach churn.

"I tried to file them an hour ago," Marcus confessed, his voice trembling slightly.

"But someone hacked into my law firm's secure server last night and deleted the digital backups."

Vanessa had completely outsmarted us by destroying the evidence before we could use it.

"I still have the physical copies locked in my office safe," Marcus quickly added to give me hope.

"But the police are currently waiting outside my building with a search warrant to seize all your files."

I realized that Julian had weaponized the legal system to entirely paralyze my defense.

"Do not let them open that safe, Marcus," I instructed him fiercely.

"I have Julian's laptop with all the proof of their conspiracy, and I am bringing it to you."

I hung up the payphone and begged the diner waitress to call me a taxi.

I paid the driver with the emergency cash I kept hidden in the lining of my tote bag.

The ride into downtown Denver was agonizingly slow as morning traffic began to build up.

I asked the taxi driver to drop me off two blocks away from Marcus's prestigious law firm.

I pulled my jacket hood over my head and crept through the back alleyways to avoid the police cruisers parked out front.

I managed to slip through the loading dock doors and sneak into the service elevator of the building.

I rode the elevator up to Marcus's floor, clutching the stolen laptop tightly to my chest.

I peered around the corner of the hallway and saw two uniformed officers standing near the reception desk.

Marcus was arguing with a detective, refusing to hand over the combination to his private safe.

I needed to create a massive distraction to get those police officers out of the office.

I found a fire alarm pull station on the wall and yanked the white handle down as hard as I could.

The deafening siren instantly echoed through the building, accompanied by flashing strobe lights.

The police officers cursed loudly and immediately began evacuating the terrified office staff.

I waited until the hallway was clear and sprinted directly into Marcus's private office.

Marcus was frantically spinning the dial on his wall safe when I slammed the door shut behind me.

He pulled the heavy steel door open, reached inside, and then froze completely.

"The physical documents are gone," Marcus whispered, turning to face me with a look of pure terror.
