Chapter 3 - The Deadly Drive

I stared at the glowing computer screen in absolute horror.

Vanessa had orchestrated the brake sabotage while I was parked at the airport, meaning my car was a rolling death trap.

I realized how incredibly lucky I had been to survive the drive up the steep mountain roads.

I slammed the laptop shut and shoved it into my leather tote bag.

I could not stay at the cabin because Julian would inevitably use the GPS tracker on my phone to find me.

I quickly turned my cell phone off and tossed it into the fireplace.

I needed to reach the local police station, but driving my tampered vehicle back down the mountain was suicide.

I walked out to the porch and examined the dark, treacherous driveway leading down to the main road.

There was an old, rusty mountain bike leaning against the side of the cabin, left behind by my father years ago.

It was my only chance to get down the mountain alive.

I grabbed the bike, secured my bag across my chest, and began the terrifying descent in the dark.

The cold night air whipped against my face as the bicycle picked up speed on the steep, gravel path.

I gripped the handlebars tightly, praying that the old tires would not blow out under the pressure.

As I navigated a sharp, dangerous curve, a pair of blinding headlights suddenly appeared behind me.

A massive black SUV was speeding down the narrow road, intentionally trying to run me over.

I pedaled as hard as I could, but the roaring engine of the vehicle was getting closer by the second.

The massive grill of the SUV bumped the back tire of my bicycle, sending a violent jolt up my spine.

I lost my balance and went tumbling off the dirt path, crashing hard into a thick patch of thorny bushes.

The bicycle flipped over the edge of the ravine and disappeared into the darkness below.

The black SUV screeched to a halt right next to where I had fallen.

I held my breath and pressed myself flat against the cold, damp earth, praying the driver would not see me.

The heavy car door clicked open, and a pair of expensive leather boots stepped out onto the gravel.

A bright flashlight beam swept across the bushes, illuminating the sharp thorns inches from my face.

A familiar voice echoed through the silent forest.

It was my best friend, the same woman I had gone to the airport to say goodbye to earlier that day.
