Chapter 6 - The Informant's Trap

The sudden revelation hit the room like a physical shockwave.
My mother stopped fake-crying instantly, staring at the golden FBI badge resting on the judge's mahogany desk.
My father slumped back in his chair, all the arrogant bluster completely deflating from his rigid posture.
"Special Agent Thomas Sterling," the undercover lawyer introduced himself, his demeanor entirely transformed from a sleazy corporate attorney to a hardened investigator.
"I infiltrated Blackridge Holdings fourteen months ago when the Bureau flagged massive offshore wire transfers connected to Vanguard Enterprises."
Sterling turned his sharp gaze toward me, his expression unreadable.
"Your father is a fool who got in too deep with illegal gambling debts," Sterling explained bluntly.
"Marcus Vance and his cartel associates offered to pay off those debts in exchange for using Blackridge as a massive money-laundering shell company."
I squeezed Ethan's hand under the table, my mind racing to process the sheer scale of my family's corruption.
"So arrest them," I said, my voice barely above a whisper.
"Arrest my father and Marcus Vance right now and end this."
Sterling shook his head slowly, leaning forward and resting his elbows on his knees.
"We cannot arrest Marcus Vance yet because the illegal cartel funds have not officially touched the Blackridge accounts," Sterling said.
"The crime has not technically been committed until the merger is legally finalized."
The judge remained completely silent, clearly aware of the federal sting operation taking place in his chambers.
"That is why I need you to sign the trust transfer document, Nora," Sterling stated, sliding the familiar paper toward me.
"If you sign it, the merger goes through, the cartel money moves, and we arrest the entire Vanguard leadership board."
"If you do not sign it, Vanguard walks away clean, and your father goes to prison for fraud anyway."
Ethan stood up abruptly, towering over the federal agent.
"If she signs that document, she loses her grandfather's legacy entirely, and Blackridge Holdings will be permanently seized by the government," Ethan argued fiercely.
"You are asking her to destroy her own inheritance just to do your job."
Sterling sighed, looking genuinely apologetic for the first time since I met him.
"I am sorry, Ethan, but the family legacy is already dead," Sterling said softly.
"And there is one more thing you both need to know."
Sterling pulled a printed transcript of a recorded phone call from his file.
"Your father did not initiate the contact with Vanguard Enterprises," Sterling revealed, turning to look directly at my sister.
"Claire did."
Claire shrank back into her chair, her face turning a ghastly shade of pale gray.
"She met Marcus Vance at a vineyard three states away," Sterling continued, exposing the exact trip they took when they skipped my graduation.
"Claire brokered the entire illegal deal to ensure she got a massive payout before the company went bankrupt."
Before anyone could react to this massive betrayal, the heavy oak doors of the judge's chambers violently burst open.

Marcus Vance stood in the doorway, flanked by two massive, armed security contractors.
"I think this little family meeting is officially over," Marcus announced, pulling a suppressed pistol from his custom tailored jacket.
