Chapter 4 - The Engineer's Gambit

I stared at the thick manila folder resting on the polished mahogany table.

Written across the tab in bold black ink was Ethan’s name, followed by the exact patent numbers Vanguard had stolen five years ago.

Marcus Vance smiled, a predatory gleam in his dark eyes.

"Your law firm partners were just explaining how highly they value your presence here, Nora," Marcus said smoothly.

"It would be a terrible shame if this silly family drama forced them to terminate your employment."

My senior partner, David, looked down at his legal pad, clearly bought and paid for by Vanguard's massive retainer fees.

"We represent Vanguard in this merger, Nora," David muttered apologetically.

"It is a massive conflict of interest for you to hold up this deal, and the public optics of your sister's video are completely unacceptable."

I felt a cold wave of betrayal wash over me, realizing my own firm had been secretly working with my father to facilitate this buyout.

Ethan stepped forward, his eyes fixed on the patent file that represented years of his stolen genius.

"All you have to do is sign the Blackridge trust over to your father," Marcus offered, tapping the folder.

"Do that, and Ethan gets his patents back, your parents keep their money, and I make sure this social media scandal disappears."

It was the perfect trap, designed to exploit our deepest vulnerabilities.

But Marcus Vance had severely underestimated my husband.

Ethan did not reach for the file; instead, he pulled his own encrypted laptop from his backpack and slammed it onto the table.

"Keep the patents, Marcus," Ethan said coldly, typing a rapid sequence of commands into his keyboard.

"Because when you stole my intellectual property five years ago, you integrated my proprietary code into Vanguard's main server architecture."

Marcus frowned, his confident smile finally slipping a fraction of an inch.

"What are you talking about?" Marcus demanded, taking a step toward the laptop.

"I am talking about a legal, backdoor diagnostic channel that I built into my original software," Ethan explained, turning the screen around.

Lines of sensitive financial data, internal Vanguard memos, and offshore bank routing numbers began scrolling rapidly across the monitor.

"I just accessed your private internal servers, Marcus," Ethan said, his voice ringing with absolute authority.

"And it looks like this merger with Blackridge Holdings is not a business expansion at all."

"It is a massive money-laundering operation designed to hide Vanguard's illegal cartel payouts through my father's failing company."

The three senior partners gasped, instantly realizing they were legally entangled in a federal crime.

Marcus Vance turned purple with rage, lunging across the table to slam the laptop shut.

"You have no idea who you are dealing with, you arrogant little mechanic!" Marcus spat, pointing a trembling finger at Ethan.

Before Marcus could threaten us further, my phone buzzed with an urgent email alert.

It was a verified electronic notice from the county family court.

My father had just filed an emergency ex-parte injunction to have me involuntarily committed to a psychiatric facility.

And the judge had granted a hearing for tomorrow morning at eight o'clock.
