Chapter 1 - The Grandfather Clause

The silence in my home office was completely deafening.

The lawyer on the video call frowned deeply, clearly disturbed by my sudden outburst of laughter.

"Ms. Mercer… are you all right?" he asked, leaning closer to his high-definition webcam.

I wiped a tear of pure, vindictive amusement from my cheek.

"I am perfectly fine, Mr. Sterling," I said, finally catching my breath after two years of forced family exile.

"It is just that my father seems to have fundamentally misread his own family trust agreement."

Mr. Sterling shifted uncomfortably in his expensive leather chair, clearly used to bullying people into submission.

"The document clearly states your signature is required to preserve his controlling interest," he insisted, tapping a gold pen against his desk.

"He is the patriarch of the family, and this is standard procedure."

I shook my head slowly and pulled up the original encrypted file my grandfather had securely sent me three years ago.

"No, Mr. Sterling, the clause actually states that my signature is required to transfer the controlling interest to him."

"And until I voluntarily sign that specific document, my grandfather’s shares do not legally default to my father."

"They default entirely to me."

Mr. Sterling went completely pale, all the arrogant color draining from his face in an instant.

My husband, Ethan, walked into the room with two mugs of coffee and leaned over my shoulder.

"Wait, so your dad does not actually own Blackridge Holdings?" Ethan asked, his voice laced with disbelief.

"He owns exactly forty-nine percent," I confirmed, accepting the coffee with a satisfied smile.

"I own the remaining fifty-one percent."

"Which means my father has been acting as the CEO illegally for the past two years while telling everyone I was crazy."

Mr. Sterling swallowed hard, nervously adjusting his silk tie as the reality of the situation set in.

"Ms. Mercer, your father is currently in the middle of a massive corporate merger with Vanguard Enterprises."

"If you do not sign this waiver by Friday afternoon, Blackridge Holdings will be ruthlessly liquidated to pay off his massive hidden debts."

Ethan stiffened immediately beside me, his hand gripping the back of my ergonomic chair.

"Did you just say Vanguard Enterprises?" Ethan asked, his tone suddenly dropping to a dangerous whisper.

Mr. Sterling nodded slowly, sensing the sudden shift in the room's atmosphere.

"Yes, they already purchased your sister Claire's minority shares early this morning to initiate the buyout."

Ethan looked at me with a complex mix of utter shock and pure dread.

"Nora, Vanguard is the exact same corrupt company that stole my engineering patents five years ago."

The blood drained from my face, my brief moment of triumphant victory shattering into pieces.

My parents were attempting to sell my grandfather's legacy to the very man who had nearly ruined my husband's life.

Before I could even process this horrific coincidence, the front doorbell suddenly rang loudly through the house.

I glanced over at the security camera monitor resting on the corner of my mahogany desk.

Standing on my front porch, completely drenched in the afternoon rain and crying hysterically, was my mother.
