Chapter 8 - The Rescue

Loud, aggressive pounding rattled the front door of the cabin.

"Police, open the door immediately!" a commanding voice shouted from the porch.

Grandma panicked, dropping the empty mug onto the floor where it shattered into pieces.

She ran to the kitchen drawer and grabbed the largest butcher knife she could find.

My eyelids felt incredibly heavy, and the room was spinning uncontrollably.

The front door burst open as two police officers kicked it entirely off its hinges.

Dad rushed into the cabin right behind them, his face pale with absolute terror.

"Lily!" he screamed, running toward me as I slumped sideways in the chair.

Grandma stepped between us, waving the butcher knife wildly at the police officers.

"Stay back, she is my granddaughter and I am protecting her!" Grandma shrieked.

One of the officers drew his taser and fired it directly into Grandma's chest.

She collapsed to the floor instantly, the knife skittering away across the wooden floorboards.

Dad fell to his knees beside my chair, desperately untying the thick ropes.

Dr. Mercer hurried into the kitchen carrying a large red medical bag.

"Her pulse is dangerously low, we need to administer the antidote immediately," the doctor said, checking my neck.

He pulled a syringe from his bag and injected it straight into my thigh.

"Dad," I mumbled, my voice sounding incredibly distant and weak.

"I'm right here, sweetie, you are safe now," he cried, burying his face in my shoulder.

The police officers placed handcuffs on Grandma and dragged her out of the cabin.

Paramedics rushed in with a stretcher, carefully lifting me out of the wooden chair.

Dr. Mercer pulled out his medical cable cutters and finally snapped the heavy combination lock off my back brace.

I took a deep, unrestricted breath, feeling the plastic shell fall away from my bruised ribs.

They loaded me into the back of the ambulance, with Dad holding my hand the entire time.

As the ambulance doors began to close, I saw Grandma standing by a police cruiser, glaring at us.

She didn't look defeated, but rather like she had accomplished exactly what she wanted.

She leaned toward the arresting officer and whispered something that made his face turn entirely pale.

The officer immediately ran toward our ambulance and banged on the back window just as we started to drive away.
