Chapter 7 - The Poisoned Tea

I screamed and kicked violently, trying to break free from her iron grip.

Grandma dragged me backward through the mud, her flashlight blinding me in the darkness.

"You are just as stubborn and difficult as your mother was," she sneered, hauling me to my feet.

She pushed me all the way back to the cabin, forcing me inside the kitchen.

She shoved me into a wooden chair and tied my wrists to the armrests using a thick rope.

"I tried to do this the easy way, to protect our family's reputation," she muttered, pacing the floor.

She walked over to the stove and turned on the gas burner to boil a kettle of water.

From her purse, she pulled out a small, unlabeled brown glass bottle.

I recognized that bottle instantly from the hidden medical files we found in her bedroom.

It was the same liquid medication she used to heavily sedate my mother before she died.

"What is that?" I asked, my voice trembling violently as she poured the thick liquid into a mug.

"It is just a special tea to help you calm down and sleep," she lied, her eyes entirely hollow.

She poured the boiling water into the mug and stirred it with a metal spoon.

She untied one of my wrists, keeping the other firmly bound to the chair.

"Drink it, Lily, or I will hold your nose and pour it down your throat," she threatened.

I looked at the steaming, dark liquid, knowing it could stop my heart if I drank it.

I had to stall for time, hoping Dr. Mercer had already called the police.

"Please, Grandma, I promise I won't run away again," I begged, tears streaming down my face.

She grabbed the back of my hair and forced my head backward, bringing the hot mug to my lips.

I clamped my mouth shut, but she pinched my nose until I had to gasp for air.

The bitter, burning liquid flooded my mouth, and I was forced to swallow it.

She smiled triumphantly, stepping back as I coughed and sputtered.

"There, now you will be a good, quiet girl," she whispered softly.

Almost immediately, my vision started to blur, and a heavy numbness spread through my limbs.

May you like

Just as my head slumped forward onto my chest, the blinding headlights of two vehicles illuminated the kitchen window.

The deafening sound of a police siren shattered the silence of the woods.
