Chapter 10 - The Secret Inheritance

Dr. Mercer quickly closed the folder, his professional demeanor returning instantly.
"What is it?" Dad asked, wiping the tears of joy from his tired face.
"Nothing to worry about right now, the most important thing is that Lily is completely healthy," the doctor reassured him.
Over the next few weeks, our lives finally returned to the peace we deserved.
Grandma was sentenced to twenty-five years in a federal prison for kidnapping, child endangerment, and the newly reopened investigation into my mother's death.
The corrupt foster mother, Sarah, was arrested, and the fake charges against my father were completely dropped.
Dad sold the old farmhouse, and we moved to a bright, sunny neighborhood in a beautiful coastal town.
I never had to wear the restrictive back brace again, as physical therapy easily corrected my slight spinal curve.
I made new friends at my new school, and I finally learned what it felt like to be a normal, happy ten-year-old girl.
Dad got a great job managing a local hardware store, and his stress lines completely disappeared.
We spent our weekends building sandcastles on the beach and eating ice cream without a single care in the world.
Our nightmare was finally over, and the monster who had tormented us was locked away forever.
One rainy afternoon, Dad was unpacking the very last cardboard box in our new garage.
He reached the bottom of the box and found a sealed, dusty envelope hidden beneath a piece of cardboard.
He recognized my late mother's elegant handwriting across the front of the paper.
He slowly tore it open and read the single, chilling sentence written inside.
"If my mother ever tries to lock the brace on Lily, you must take her and hide before she finds the boy."
Dad stared at the paper in absolute horror, realizing my grandmother had not been acting alone.

Because somewhere out there, I had a brother.
And whoever he was, he was coming for us.
