Chapter 4 - The Custody Trap

I dropped the note onto the floor like it was burning my fingers.

I ran out of the bedroom and rushed down the hallway to find Sarah, my new foster mother.

"She was here, my grandmother was in my room!" I cried, tugging on Sarah's sleeve.

Sarah knelt down and rubbed my arms gently to calm me down.

"Oh honey, nobody has been in that room all day," Sarah said with a sympathetic smile.

I dragged her back into the bedroom and pointed at the white paper on the floor.

Sarah picked up the note, read it, and then looked at me with deep concern.

"Lily, I wrote this note to tell you that you wouldn't ruin our family dynamic," she lied smoothly.

I backed away from her, my heart hammering wildly against my ribs.

Sarah's kind smile slowly vanished, replaced by a cold, calculating stare.

"Your grandmother pays very well to make sure problem children stay out of trouble," Sarah whispered.

I realized with absolute horror that this was not a safe emergency placement.

Grandma had connections, and she had somehow manipulated the system to place me with her friends.

I ran toward the front door, but Sarah grabbed my arm with surprising strength.

"You are going to march back to that room and stay quiet until the morning," she threatened.

She locked me inside the bedroom, leaving me trapped with no phone and no way to call for help.

I spent the entire night sitting on the floor, staring at the locked door.

When morning finally broke, the doorknob clicked and turned slowly.

Instead of Sarah, my grandmother walked into the room wearing her Sunday best.

"Get your coat, Lily, the judge granted me temporary emergency custody," Grandma said with a sickeningly sweet smile.

"I won't go with you," I defied her, pressing my back against the wall.

Grandma stepped closer, her eyes flashing with a dangerous kind of anger.

"Your father is sitting in a jail cell, facing twenty years for child abuse," she hissed.

"If you cause a scene, I will make sure the prosecutor gets the rest of his fabricated evidence."

She held all the cards, and she knew I would do anything to protect my dad.

I silently grabbed my coat and walked out to her car parked in the driveway.

She started the engine and drove us away from the suburbs, heading toward the dense forests outside of town.

"Where are we going?" I asked, noticing we were not taking the highway home.

"We are going to the old hunting cabin by the lake," she replied cheerfully.

She reached into her purse and pulled out a brand new, heavy-duty combination padlock.

"And this time, there is no key for that nosy doctor to ask for," she smiled.
