Chapter 2 - The Perfect Performance

David clicked the record button and suddenly fell to his knees on the bathroom tiles.
He began sobbing loudly, begging me to please put the wooden stool down and stop hurting him.
I stared at him in sheer disbelief, my brain struggling to process the incredibly manipulative performance unfolding before me.
Eleanor rushed into the bathroom right behind him, wailing dramatically and clutching her chest.
She screamed that I was suffering from severe postpartum psychosis and had lost my mind.
Before I could even shout a denial into my open phone line, heavy footsteps thundered up the wooden staircase.
Two police officers burst into the master bedroom with their tasers drawn, completely out of breath.
They found a weeping, bleeding husband and a hysterical grandmother pointing terrified fingers directly at me.
I was cowering in the bathtub, clutching my newborn, with a split lip and a rapidly swelling cheek.
I desperately tried to explain that David had dragged me down the hallway and slammed me into the doorframe.
The older police officer lowered his taser, his eyes scanning the wooden stool on the floor and the deep gash on David's leg.
He walked toward the bathtub with a cautious, steady pace, treating me like a dangerous animal.
He commanded me to slowly hand the baby over to his grandmother before anyone else got hurt.
I screamed that they were lying, that my husband was the one who had brutally attacked me.
The officer ignored my pleas, forcefully grabbing my arms and pinning them behind my back.
As he snapped cold steel handcuffs around my bruised wrists, Eleanor snatched my crying baby from my arms.

David looked up from the floor, wiped away a fake tear, and gave me a sinister, triumphant smile.
The younger officer picked up my phone from the sink and ended the 911 call with a single tap.
