Chapter 1 - The Broken Lock

The metallic jingle of my own car keys dropping into my husband's palm echoed through the thin wooden door.
My breathing turned ragged as I clutched my three-day-old newborn, Leo, tightly against my bruised chest.
The 911 dispatcher's voice whispered softly from the phone resting on the edge of the porcelain sink.
She promised me that officers were already dispatched and speeding toward our suburban neighborhood.
I stared at the heavy wooden bathroom door, praying the cheap locking mechanism would hold long enough for the police to arrive.
Suddenly, the absolute silence on the other side of the door was broken by the sharp scrape of metal against metal.
My mother-in-law, Eleanor, had gone into the kitchen and returned with a heavy flathead screwdriver.
I watched in absolute horror as the small lock dial in the center of the doorknob began to slowly turn from the outside.
David was calmly picking the emergency release slot, a feature designed to keep toddlers from locking themselves in.
I scrambled backward into the dry bathtub, shielding Leo's fragile head with my trembling hands.
The dispatcher asked me if the attacker was trying to breach the room, and I choked out a terrified confirmation.
I frantically looked around the tiny bathroom for anything else I could use as a weapon.
The wooden stool I had smashed into David's shin was now sitting uselessly near the toilet, entirely out of my reach.
The doorknob clicked loudly, signaling that the locking mechanism had been completely bypassed.
I squeezed my eyes shut and braced for the violent impact of the door swinging open.
Instead, a deafening splintering sound ripped through the air as the wood fractured around the doorframe.
David had not just unlocked the door, he had aggressively kicked it open with enough force to shatter the hinges entirely.

He stood in the doorway with blood dripping down his shin, his eyes dark and empty.
He stepped into the bathroom, blocking my only exit, and pulled a sleek digital voice recorder out of his pocket.
