Chapter 10 - The Truth and The Vow

A year after the nightmare ended, the sun shone brightly over the gardens of our new home in the suburbs.

I stood under a beautiful floral archway, watching Rachel walk down the aisle in a stunning white dress.

The triplets were serving as the ring bearers and flower girls, stumbling happily across the grass.

When Rachel finally reached me, her brown eyes were filled with an overwhelming, absolute joy.

We exchanged vows that we wrote ourselves, completely ignoring the traditional scripts.

"I lost you for four years, but I will spend the next forty making sure you never doubt my love again," I promised her.

Rachel wiped a happy tear from her cheek and placed the gold ring on my finger.

"You are the only man I have ever loved, Evan, and you are the greatest father in the world," she replied softly.

The minister pronounced us husband and wife, and the small crowd of our closest friends erupted into applause.

I kissed my wife, completely at peace with the beautiful life we had finally fought so hard to build.

Our family was safe, our home was secure, and the shadows of the past were completely gone.

Later that evening, after the guests had left and the children were asleep, I walked out to the mailbox.

I pulled out a small stack of wedding congratulations cards and a single, unmarked black envelope.

I opened the black envelope under the porch light, expecting a gift card or a late RSVP.

Instead, I found a single photograph of Noelle inside her maximum-security prison cell, but her throat was violently slashed open.

The note written on the back of the bloody picture was exactly in Rachel's handwriting.

"Noelle was just a puppet, Evan, and the real owners of your company are coming to collect the children tonight."
