Chapter 5 - THE CONFRONTATION

On Friday afternoon, the buzzer to my small, accessible apartment blared aggressively. I checked the security monitor. It was Chloe, Susan, and David. They looked frantic.
I buzzed them up, leaving my front door unlocked. I sat perfectly still in my chair in the center of the living room.
They burst in like a hurricane.
“What did you do?!” Chloe screamed, her designer makeup smeared down her face. “My credit cards are declining! The venue is suing me for the cancellation fees!”
“Evelyn, call Eleanor right now,” my father demanded, stepping toward me with a threatening posture. “You tell her to call off her lawyers. The bank just locked us out of everything!”
“Eleanor didn't freeze your accounts, Dad,” I said calmly, picking up a stack of legal papers from my coffee table. “I did.”
My mother froze. “What are you talking about?”
“Eight million dollars,” I said, dropping the papers onto the floor at their feet. “That was the settlement. For my skin. For my pain. You bought a Porsche while I was screaming in a burn ward.”
All the blood drained from David’s face. Chloe looked genuinely confused—she was too self-absorbed to have even known where the money came from.

“Evelyn, we can explain,” my mother stammered, stepping back.
“Explain it to the judge,” I said. “Get out of my house before I call the police for trespassing.”
