Chapter 10 - THE REAL NEW BEGINNING

Five years later.
The Evelyn Grace Foundation for Pediatric Burn Survivors was opening its newest wing in Atlanta. The ribbon-cutting ceremony was filled with laughter, sunlight, and the hopeful faces of children who had survived the unimaginable.
I stood at the podium. I didn't need the wheelchair anymore. Using the recovered funds, I had spent the last three years traveling to the best reconstructive surgeons in Switzerland and Boston. My scars were still there—they always would be—but the skin grafts had given me back my mobility, my independence, and my life.
I looked out into the front row.
Eleanor sat there, clapping proudly. She was the grandmother I never had, the family I had always deserved. Next to her sat Liam and his new wife, Sarah—a brilliant pediatric nurse he had met at the hospital. They were expecting their first child.
I had heard through the grapevine that Susan was working as a cashier at a grocery store on the outskirts of town. David was still in prison. And Chloe? She was working double shifts at a diner, her luxurious aesthetic replaced by the harsh reality of minimum wage.
But I rarely thought of them.
“When I was young, I was taught that scars were something to hide,” I told the crowd, looking out at the young burn survivors in the audience. “But scars are not symbols of defeat. They are proof that when the fire tried to consume us, we were too strong to burn.”

The crowd erupted into applause.
I stepped down from the podium, leaving the ghosts of my past behind forever. The fire had taken my childhood, and my family had tried to take my future. But in the end, I had walked through the flames and built an empire from the ashes.
