Chapter 1 - THE ULTIMATUM

The silence in the chapel was deafening.
“She saved your life, Chloe,” Eleanor Vance repeated, her voice ringing off the vaulted ceilings. She didn’t yell. She didn’t have to.
Chloe’s perfect, porcelain face flushed a deep, ugly shade of crimson. “Eleanor, please, this is a family matter. We’re just trying to organize the photos—”
“Do not lie to me in the house of God,” Eleanor interrupted, stepping into the center of the aisle. “I heard exactly what you said to her. You told the woman who walked through fire for you to hide in the back because she was ruining your aesthetic.”
A collective gasp rippled through the pews. Guests began whispering frantically.
Liam, the groom, stepped down from the altar. He was a good man—a pediatric surgeon who had always been kind to me. He looked at Chloe as if he were seeing a stranger. “Chloe… tell me my mother misheard you.”
Chloe panicked. She looked at our parents for help. My mother, Susan, finally spoke up, her voice trembling. “Liam, it’s just high emotions. Evelyn knows we love her, it’s just that the photographer—”
“Stop,” Liam commanded. The word cracked like a whip. He walked over to me, looking down at my scarred hands resting on the wheels of my chair. Then, he looked back at his bride. “Apologize to your sister, Chloe. Right now. In front of everyone.”
Chloe’s jaw set stubbornly. “I am the bride! It is my day! Why does she always have to make everything about her?”
Liam stared at her for a long, agonizing moment. He reached up, unpinned the white boutonnière from his tuxedo lapel, and dropped it onto the floor.

“There isn't going to be a wedding,” Liam said quietly.
Chloe screamed. But Liam had already turned his back on her, walking down the aisle to stand beside his mother.
