Chapter 8 - The Ghost of the Past

The monitors in the trauma bay beeped rapidly.
I stared at the trembling doctor in complete shock.
Margaret stepped forward, her eyes wide with disbelief.
"Dr. Thomas Sterling?" Margaret asked quietly.
"You are her father?"
Tears streamed down the doctor's weathered face.
He slowly approached my bed, as if I were a mirage.
"My wife and daughter died in a car crash twenty-five years ago," he whispered.
"The police told me the car went off a bridge into the river."
"They never found her body."
My head spun with a million questions.
"The Whitmores faked the adoption papers," Margaret explained softly.
"They paid someone to forge the documents."
"They needed a child to access a loophole in a massive trust fund."
Dr. Sterling reached out a trembling hand.
He gently touched a patch of unscarred skin on my cheek.
"You have your mother's eyes," he cried.
A deep, profound warmth spread through my chest.
For the first time in my life, I felt truly seen by a parent.
He wasn't looking at my scars.
He was looking at his little girl.
Daniel stood in the doorway, his bandaged hands resting by his sides.
He smiled softly at the emotional reunion.
The nightmare was finally unraveling.
But outside in the hallway, danger was still lurking.
The police had arrested Mark and Emily at the church.
But in the chaos, Linda had slipped away unseen.
The hospital security system had not flagged her entrance.
Late that night, the hospital ward was dark and quiet.
Dr. Sterling had gone to his office to pull my original medical files.
Margaret and Daniel had gone to the cafeteria for coffee.
I was lying in the dark, trying to process my new reality.
The door to my hospital room slowly creaked open.
A shadow moved silently across the linoleum floor.
Linda stepped into the dim light.
She was holding a syringe filled with a clear liquid.
Her eyes were completely devoid of sanity.

"I can't let you ruin our family, Sarah," she whispered.
She raised the needle toward my IV line.
