Chapter 9 - The Tarmac Takedown

We arrived at the private airfield just as the sun began to peek over the dark horizon.

The flashing red and blue lights of dozens of police cruisers illuminated a sleek, expensive private jet sitting on the tarmac.

I stepped out of the FBI vehicle with Dr. Conner and watched the final act of this nightmare unfold.

My mother was being dragged down the metal stairs of the aircraft by two heavily armored federal agents.

She was screaming hysterically, demanding to speak to her lawyers and threatening to sue everyone in sight.

Tessa was sitting on the wet pavement in handcuffs, sobbing uncontrollably and begging for mercy.

My mother suddenly locked eyes with me across the runway, and her furious expression shifted into pure, venomous hatred.

She screamed that I had always been a pathetic, ungrateful child who ruined everything she ever built.

I did not shrink away from her anger, and I did not let her cruel words break my spirit.

I walked right up to her, completely ignoring the painful throbbing in my broken ribs.

I looked her dead in the eyes and thanked her for finally showing me exactly who she was.

I told her that she was going to spend the rest of her miserable life rotting in a tiny concrete cell.

The FBI agents shoved my mother into the back of a transport van and slammed the heavy metal doors shut.

Tessa tried to apologize to me, swearing that she only went along with the plan because our mother forced her.

I simply turned my back on my sister and walked away without uttering a single word to her.

Dr. Conner placed a comforting hand on my back and promised that I would never have to see them again.

The ambulance arrived to properly treat my injuries, and I finally allowed myself to rest on the stretcher.

The nightmare was completely over, and I had survived the darkest night of my entire life.

I closed my eyes and listened to the soothing hum of the ambulance engine as it drove me toward a brand new beginning.
