Chapter 4 - The Midnight Awakening

I fought the heavy, chemical darkness pulling me under with every ounce of willpower I possessed.

I knew that if I closed my eyes, I would never open them again.

The monitors began to beep slowly as my heart rate dropped, and Liam smiled before leaving the room.

I waited until the door clicked shut before I bit down hard on the inside of my cheek.

The sharp, metallic taste of my own blood sent a shock of adrenaline through my fading nervous system.

I reached over with my good arm and violently ripped the IV needle out of the back of my hand.

Blood dripped onto the white sheets, but the steady flow of the sedative was finally stopped.

I spent the next hour forcing myself to stay awake while the drugs slowly processed out of my body.

When the hospital corridor finally grew quiet with the midnight shift change, I made my move.

I unstrapped the heavy brace from my injured leg, biting back a scream as fresh agony tore through my muscles.

I slipped out of the bed and fell heavily onto the cold linoleum floor.

I dragged myself toward the small closet where the nurses had stored my personal belongings upon admission.

I found my blood-stained jeans, my torn sweater, and my cracked cell phone hidden in a plastic evidence bag.

I powered on the phone and prayed that the battery had not completely died during the crash.

The screen flickered to life, showing a meager five percent charge remaining.

I opened my cloud storage application, knowing my car’s hidden dashcam automatically uploaded audio files to my private server.

I pressed play on the most recent recording from the morning of the accident.

I did not hear the sound of traffic or the radio.

I heard my mother and Liam having a casual conversation inside my car while I was supposedly asleep in the house.

My mother coldly told Liam to make sure the brake lines were cut completely through so I would not survive the first intersection.
