Chapter 2 - The Tampered Brakes

The word conservatorship echoed in my ears like a death sentence.

Liam placed the lilies on the table and looked at me as if I were a misbehaving child.

He told Dr. Conner that my delusions were clearly getting worse and requested that she leave the room.

Dr. Conner refused to move, stating she had a moral obligation to protect her patient from abuse.

Liam chuckled darkly and pulled out his cell phone to dial the hospital administrator.

Within minutes, the chief of medicine arrived and ordered Dr. Conner to hand over my chart immediately.

I watched in absolute horror as the only person willing to protect me was escorted out of my room by security.

Liam sat in the chair beside my bed and gently stroked my bruised cheek with his thumb.

I pulled my face away from his touch, feeling physically sick to my stomach.

I asked him why he was doing this to the woman he supposedly loved.

He leaned in close and whispered that twenty million dollars was a lot of money to leave in the hands of a crazy person.

My late father had left a massive trust fund that I was set to inherit on my upcoming twenty-fifth birthday.

Before I could scream for help, a uniformed police detective walked through the open doorway.

The detective held a damaged clipboard and asked if I was lucid enough to answer questions about the crash.

Liam immediately interrupted, playing the role of the heartbroken, protective fiancé.

He tried to dismiss the detective by claiming I was heavily medicated and prone to hallucinations.

The detective ignored Liam entirely and looked directly into my terrified eyes.

The officer stated that the forensics team had just finished inspecting the wreckage of my vehicle.

My car had not hydroplaned on the wet asphalt like the initial emergency responders believed.

The detective revealed that my brake lines had been cleanly and deliberately severed with a pair of heavy wire cutters.
