Chapter 7 - The Final Betrayal

I stared at Liam sitting on the sofa, feeling the last shred of my hope evaporate into thin air.

Mr. Vance closed the heavy front door behind me and locked the deadbolt with a sickening metallic click.

Liam stood up, casually adjusting the cuffs of his expensive designer shirt.

I looked at the older lawyer and asked him how much my mother had paid him to betray my father's memory.

Mr. Vance chuckled dryly and explained that he had hated my father for thirty years.

My father had built his empire by ruthlessly crushing Mr. Vance's own business ventures when they were young men.

This entire conspiracy was not just about my mother wanting the inheritance money for herself.

It was a decades-long revenge plot orchestrated by Mr. Vance to completely destroy my father's bloodline.

Liam walked toward me holding a heavy, suppressed handgun he had pulled from his waistband.

He told me that my tragic death would be ruled a suicide caused by severe mental distress following the car accident.

Mr. Vance walked over to his desk and picked up a large, manila envelope containing my finalized death certificate.

They had already bribed the county coroner to sign off on the paperwork before I was even dead.

I backed away slowly, my mind racing as I looked around the room for any possible weapon.

I bumped against a heavy, antique bronze statue resting on a marble pedestal near the entryway.

Liam raised the gun and pointed the barrel directly between my eyes.

He smiled and whispered that he would make sure to spend my father's money on a beautiful funeral.

Before he could pull the trigger, the massive glass patio doors behind the sofa shattered into a million pieces.
