Chapter 9 - The Unexpected Ally

I raised my hands slowly into the air, realizing the city's corruption ran deeper than I could have ever imagined.
The lead tactical officer stepped forward, his face completely hidden behind a heavy ballistic mask and helmet.
He ordered his men to secure the immediate area and instructed Evelyn to step safely to the side.
Evelyn smirked triumphantly, turning her back to the armed officer as she prepared to watch my brutal execution.
Without any warning, the lead officer quickly pivoted and slammed the butt of his rifle directly into Evelyn's spine.
She collapsed to the concrete with a loud shriek of pain, completely shocked by the sudden, violent betrayal.
The officer ripped off his dark mask, revealing the familiar, rugged face of a man I had known for years.
It was Detective Miller, a straight-laced federal task force agent who had investigated Evelyn's father twenty years ago.
He shouted that the FBI had successfully received my live stream before the EMP blast cut the signal.
Miller and his uncorrupted squad immediately opened heavy fire on Evelyn's hired, stunned thugs.
The warehouse erupted into a chaotic, deafening gunfight as bullets tore through the rusting metal walls.
I dove across the cold concrete floor, tackling the massive thug who was holding my crying grandson.
I wrapped my body fiercely around Toby, shielding him completely from the terrifying hail of gunfire.

Within moments, the intense firefight ended with all of Evelyn's men either incapacitated or dead on the floor.
Evelyn tried to crawl away into the darkness, but Detective Miller placed a heavy boot on her back and locked her in steel handcuffs.
