Chapter 6 - The Betrayal in the Office

I stood absolutely still as the cold, black barrel of the silenced pistol locked onto my heart.
Marcus coldly explained that my death would be staged to look like a desperate suicide caused by sudden financial ruin.
I slowly reached into my tuxedo pocket, pretending to retrieve the small plastic USB drive he demanded.
Instead of pulling out the drive, my fingers wrapped tightly around the heavy brass cigar lighter I always carried.
With a sudden, violent surge of adrenaline, I hurled the solid brass lighter directly at his face.
The heavy metal struck Marcus squarely in the bridge of his nose, breaking the bone with a sickening crunch.
He cried out in sudden agony, stumbling backward and dropping the pistol onto the thick carpet.
I lunged across the room, tackling my former friend to the floor with the desperate strength of a terrified father.
I drove my fist into his jaw, knocking him completely unconscious before he could reach for the weapon again.
I grabbed the gun from the floor, my chest heaving as I realized how close I had just come to dying.
I knew I couldn't go to the local police because Marcus had deep, corrupt connections within the city precinct.
I was a wealthy fugitive in my own city, stripped of my power and hunted by a massive criminal conspiracy.
My personal cell phone suddenly buzzed in my pocket, displaying a text message from Evelyn's number.
I opened the message, and the remaining blood drained completely from my face.

It was a live video feed of Toby, sitting in the back of a moving van and crying for his mother.
Evelyn had sent her mercenaries to the hospital to kidnap my grandson right out from under Sarah's nose.
