Chapter 5 - The Master Manipulator

I stared at the photograph of the burning house, the acrid taste of fear rising in my throat.

Evelyn was systematically destroying every single piece of my life with terrifying speed and precision.

I frantically dialed Sarah's cell phone, nearly collapsing in relief when she answered from the hospital waiting room.

She was perfectly safe, completely unaware that her beautiful suburban home had just been reduced to ashes.

I realized the burning house wasn't just a brutal attack; it was a distraction meant to keep me isolated and terrified.

Suddenly, the heavy oak door of the office clicked shut, and the deadbolt slid into place with a loud snap.

Marcus stepped out from the shadows of the private adjoining bathroom, holding a silenced pistol in his right hand.

My oldest, most trusted friend pointed the lethal weapon directly at my chest without a single ounce of hesitation.

I asked him why he would betray a thirty-year friendship to help a psychotic gold digger steal my company.

Marcus laughed bitterly, shaking his head as he explained that Evelyn wasn't just some random younger woman.

He revealed that Evelyn's real last name was Harrington, the daughter of my former business partner.

Her father had committed suicide after a massive corporate embezzlement scandal ruined him twenty years ago.

Evelyn had spent two entire decades meticulously planning her revenge against the man she blamed for her father's death.

Marcus confessed that he had been secretly working with Evelyn the entire time, slowly feeding her my weaknesses.

He demanded I hand over the USB drive so they could permanently destroy the only evidence of Evelyn's crimes.

He slowly pulled the trigger back, his eyes completely devoid of any mercy or remorse.
