Chapter 1 - The Hidden Truth

I stood absolutely frozen in the luxurious, dimly lit hallway of the Grand Plaza Hotel.
The tiny, scratched black piece of plastic felt incredibly heavy in the center of my trembling palm.
Down the corridor, the cheerful, elegant sounds of a professional string quartet drifted through the heavy oak doors of the main ballroom.
One hundred and twenty of my closest friends, family members, and esteemed business partners were waiting for me.
They were expecting a joyous celebration, holding raised champagne glasses to toast my new life.
Instead, my mind was violently reeling from the terrifying accusation my three-year-old grandson had just whispered.
I scooped Toby into my arms, holding his small, shaking body tightly against my chest.
I completely ignored the frantic wedding coordinator who was trying to wave me toward the altar with a panicked expression.
I carried my grandson into a vacant bridal preparation room and slammed the heavy wooden door shut.
I locked the deadbolt quickly, my hands shaking so badly I could barely turn the brass mechanism.
I pulled my sleek silver laptop from the leather overnight bag I had left on the vanity table earlier that morning.
My heart pounded a frantic, deafening rhythm against my ribs as I inserted the damaged USB drive into the port.
A single video file popped up on the high-definition screen, timestamped from yesterday afternoon.
I clicked play, and the familiar, comforting image of my own living room filled the screen.
Evelyn was pacing back and forth across the expensive Persian rug, looking nothing like the sweet woman I loved.
Her usually warm face was twisted into an ugly, cruel sneer that sent a violent chill down my spine.
My daughter, Genevieve, was sitting on the edge of the velvet couch, crying silently.
Genevieve looked completely terrified, clutching a porcelain teacup as if her entire life depended on it.
Evelyn leaned down, her eyes flashing with pure malice, and slapped my daughter hard across the face.
The sharp sound of the impact echoed through the computer speakers, making my blood run completely cold.
"You will take these pills, and you will write the suicide note exactly as I dictated," Evelyn hissed on the recording.
"If you try to warn your pathetic father, I will make sure little Toby has a very tragic, fatal accident."
I slammed the laptop shut, gasping for air as the horrifying reality of the situation crushed my soul.
The woman I was about to marry was a violent, calculating monster who was actively destroying my family.

Suddenly, the brass handle of the locked door began to rattle violently from the outside.
"Thomas, darling, are you hiding in there?" Evelyn's sickeningly sweet, melodic voice called out from the hallway.
