Chapter 4 - The Dropped Phone

I held my breath as I stood completely paralyzed in the quiet hotel hallway.

Elena continued speaking in a cold, highly calculated tone that terrified me.

She explained that Ryan had recently increased my life insurance policy to a staggering ten million dollars.

Maya laughed cruelly and suggested that a fatal car crash would neatly solve all of their financial problems.

I finally understood that this was not merely a plot to steal my family inheritance and tech company.

They were actively planning to murder me in cold blood.

I knew I desperately needed physical evidence of this conspiracy to take straight to the police.

I pulled my smartphone from my jacket pocket and activated the voice recorder app.

My hands were shaking so violently that the sleek phone slipped entirely from my sweaty grip.

It hit the hardwood floor of the hallway with a loud, echoing crack that sounded like a gunshot.

The casual conversation inside room 412 stopped instantly.

I snatched my phone from the floor and ran frantically toward the glowing red emergency stairwell sign.

I heard the heavy door of Maya's hotel room swing open violently behind me.

Heavy footsteps began sprinting down the carpeted hallway directly in my direction.

I threw open the stairwell door and scrambled dangerously down the concrete steps in the pitch black.

I could hear someone breathing heavily just one flight of stairs above my head.

I pushed through the lobby exit doors and bolted into the freezing night air.

I managed to reach my parked car and lock the doors just as a dark figure emerged from the hotel lobby.

I started the engine and sped recklessly out of the parking garage without ever looking back.

I drove aimlessly for hours until the morning sun finally began to rise over the towering city skyline.

I parked in a deserted diner parking lot to gather my scattered thoughts and form a plan.

My phone suddenly vibrated with a new text message from Ryan.

The chilling message told me to come home immediately because he had a wonderful surprise waiting for me.
