Chapter 1 - The Transfer Document

The drive home from the busy airport was the most agonizing thirty minutes of my entire life.

Ryan sat completely relaxed in the driver's seat humming a cheerful pop song on the radio.

He reached over the center console and gently squeezed my knee with a warm smile.

His familiar touch made my skin crawl with absolute disgust.

I forced a bright smile and asked him how his morning business meetings had gone.

He lied flawlessly without breaking eye contact with the highway traffic.

He claimed he had been stuck in a boring conference room all morning listening to budget reports.

My designer purse felt incredibly heavy resting on my lap.

The secret audio recording of his treacherous airport conversation was safely stored on my phone inside it.

When we finally pulled into our suburban driveway, he casually mentioned a small favor he needed.

He said his corporate accountant had sent over some routine tax documents for my signature.

He framed it as a boring administrative task required for our joint checking account.

I followed him into his home office and watched him pull a thick manila folder from his leather briefcase.

He flipped it open to the last page and handed me an expensive silver pen.

He pointed eagerly to the empty signature line at the bottom of the page.

I kept my hands folded tightly across my chest and refused to take the pen.

I told him calmly that I needed to read exactly what I was signing first.

Ryan laughed nervously and said it was just standard legal jargon that would bore me to death.

I ignored his protests, pulled the folder toward me, and flipped back to the very first page.

The bold header did not mention a joint checking account or standard annual taxes.

It was a legally binding contract transferring my family's entire real estate portfolio to a private offshore LLC.

I scanned quickly down to the bottom of the page to find the managing director of the newly formed LLC.

The name printed in bold black ink was Elena Vance.

I immediately recognized that specific name from a designer luggage tag I had just seen at the airport.

Elena Vance was the beautiful woman Ryan had been holding tightly in his arms.
