Chapter 3 - The Broken Trust

I sat in my car, staring blankly at the steering wheel while my heart pounded in my ears.
My father was the same man who had stood silently in the hospital room while Brooke mocked my marriage.
I knew he would immediately tell Gavin if I asked him to sign the trust documents.
I needed to find a way to bypass him entirely before the bank foreclosed on my property.
I called a private investigator named Vance, a man known for finding loopholes in impossible situations.
Vance met me in a dimly lit diner and reviewed my grandmother's original will.
He discovered a hidden legal clause stating the executor could be bypassed if they were actively conspiring against the beneficiary.
I just needed solid proof that my father knew about Gavin's financial crimes.
Vance smiled and handed me a separate, smaller manila envelope.
He had already tapped into the hospital's security network to investigate Brooke's visitors.
Vance told me to look closely at the dates on the attached medical reports.
The ultrasound records proved that Brooke's baby was conceived nearly three months before Gavin even started the affair.
Gavin was entirely oblivious to the fact that he was raising another man's child.
I pulled out the final photograph in the envelope and felt my blood turn to ice.

The man kissing Brooke in the hospital parking lot nine months ago was not a stranger.
It was Gavin's estranged older brother, Eric.
