Chapter 1 - The Billionaire's Secret

I turned around slowly, my heart pounding violently against my ribs like a trapped bird trying to escape its cage.
Standing directly behind our row in the VIP section was a tall, incredibly wealthy-looking man flanked by two massive security guards.
My husband, David, went completely pale in an instant and dropped his large soda cup directly onto the sticky concrete floor.
The strange man smiled perfectly for the cameras, but his dark eyes were entirely cold and completely devoid of any human emotion.
He held a sleek, highly secured silver briefcase tightly in his right hand, guarding it like it contained the secrets of the universe.
"Hello, David," the stranger said in a deep, commanding voice that somehow carried perfectly over the deafening stadium noise.
"It has been exactly ten years since you broke into my life and stole my most valuable property."
I looked at my husband frantically, desperately waiting for him to tell the man he was crazy and had the wrong family.
Instead of defending us, David fell to his knees in the middle of the bleachers and began to weep uncontrollably into his trembling hands.
Ethan gripped my hand incredibly tightly, his frail body shaking as he watched his normally stoic father suffer a complete mental breakdown.
"Who are you, and what do you want with my family?" I demanded fiercely, shielding my sick son with my own body to protect him.
The man looked down at me with a sickening look of pure pity that made my stomach churn with sudden nausea.
"My name is Julian Vance, and I am the billionaire CEO of Vance Pharmaceuticals, the company that owns the hospital where your son is being treated."
He tapped the heavy silver briefcase with one perfectly manicured finger, drawing my eyes to the high-tech biometric lock on the handle.
"Inside this specific case is the only existing dose of an experimental, unreleased genetic cure that will completely eradicate Ethan's cancer within twenty-four hours."
I gasped loudly, warm tears of desperate hope instantly springing to my eyes as I instinctively reached my hand out toward the metal case.
I begged him to please give the medicine to us, promising to sell our house, empty our retirement accounts, and give him absolutely everything we owned in return.
Julian laughed at my plea, a cruel and horribly hollow sound that chilled me to the absolute bone despite the warm evening air.
"I do not want your pathetic, middle-class money, Sarah, because I already have more wealth than you could possibly comprehend in a hundred lifetimes."
He pointed a long, accusing finger directly at my sobbing husband, who was still cowering helplessly on the concrete floor.
"I want David to finally tell you the horrifying truth about what actually happened on the stormy night you gave birth in my hospital."
I looked down at David, my mind racing with absolute confusion and a rising, suffocating dread that threatened to crush my chest.
David slowly looked up at me, his face twisted in agony and pure devastation swimming in his tear-filled, bloodshot eyes.
"I am so incredibly sorry, Sarah, but our biological baby did not survive the complicated delivery and died in the incubator that very night."
The entire world seemed to stop spinning instantly as those horrific, unbelievable words left his trembling lips and echoed in my ears.
"I could not bear to see your heart broken into a million pieces, so I secretly swapped our dead baby with the healthy son of a billionaire in the exclusive VIP maternity ward."
I looked down at Ethan, the beautiful boy I had fiercely loved, protected, and raised for ten wonderful years, realizing with utter terror that he was not my flesh and blood.

Julian stepped forward with a victorious smirk and clicked the briefcase open to reveal a faintly glowing, life-saving blue vial of medicine.
"I will give you this miracle cure to save his life right now, but only if you hand my biological son back to me tonight and promise to walk away from him forever."
