Chương 9 - The Target

Maya slowly turned to look at Mason.

The billionaire did not deny it.

He did not lower his weapon.

"Is it true?" Maya whispered, stepping away from him.

Mason finally lowered the gun, his dark eyes locking onto hers.

"I bought the building your café is in three months ago," he admitted quietly.

"I put my men on your street."

"I drank terrible espresso every day just to make sure you were safe."

"Why?" Maya shouted, her voice echoing off the brick walls.

"Because you aren't just a barista, Maya," Mason said, stepping closer.

"Your father didn't die in a car crash."

"He was the previous boss of the Seattle port territory."

"When he died, the territory legally defaulted to his only heir."

Maya shook her head in sheer denial.

"No."

"That's a lie."

"It's the truth," Mason insisted.

"The Volkovs want to kill you to take the territory."

"Your Aunt Judith wants to control you to steal the profits."

"I stepped in because I refuse to let them touch what belongs to me."

Maya backed away until her shoulders hit the cold brick wall.

"I want to leave," she demanded.

"I am walking out of here right now."

Mason shook his head slowly, reaching into his jacket.

"You can't walk out that door, Maya."

"Because the head of the Volkov syndicate just pulled up outside with forty armed men."

Mason pulled a sleek, loaded handgun from his waistband and pressed it firmly into Maya's trembling hands.

"We are going to war."
