Chương 3 - The Wedding Arrival

Maya choked on her water.

"You threatened Daniel?"

"I merely suggested that attending this wedding would be detrimental to his long-term health," Mason replied flatly.

Maya realized she had made a deal with a literal devil.

The convoy pulled up to the sprawling country club where the reception was being held.

The valet attendants scrambled backward in sheer terror as the heavily armed guards stepped out first.

Mason offered Maya his arm.

She took it, her fingers sinking into the expensive wool of his suit jacket.

The moment they walked through the grand double doors of the banquet hall, the music seemed to fade.

Aunt Judith dropped her champagne flute directly onto the polished floor.

Every single eye in the room locked onto the imposing billionaire and the café worker on his arm.

Maya forced her best customer-service smile, holding tightly to Mason.

Aunt Judith marched over like a general preparing for war.

"Maya Bennett," her aunt snapped, her eyes scanning Mason from head to toe.

"This is certainly not Daniel."

"Daniel is in the past, Judith," Mason intervened, his voice a low, commanding rumble.

He looked at Maya with an expression of such intense, manufactured adoration that her breath hitched.

"Maya deserves a man who can give her the world, not just weekends."

Aunt Judith was instantly silenced, her mouth opening and closing like a trapped fish.

Maya felt a sudden, dizzying rush of triumph.

She looked around the room, proud of her terrifying fake boyfriend for exactly ten seconds.

Then her gaze caught a catering waiter standing near the ice sculpture.

The man was not looking at the bride or the groom.

He was staring dead at Mason, slowly unbuttoning his vest to reach for the heavy steel grip of a weapon.
