Chương 6 - The Interrogation
Maya grabbed Aunt Judith by the shoulder and spun her around.
"What are you doing?" Maya shouted, no longer caring who heard her.
Aunt Judith looked at Maya with an expression of pure, unfiltered panic.
"Shut your mouth, Maya," her aunt hissed.
"You have no idea what you brought into this house."
Maya grabbed the heavy envelope from Mason's hand and ripped it open.
Thick stacks of hundred-dollar bills spilled out onto the stone floor of the balcony.
"You are paying him off?" Maya demanded, her voice cracking.
"You all knew about this?"
Mason stepped forward, his massive frame easily pinning Maya against the stone wall to keep her from running.
"Go back inside, Judith," Mason ordered coldly.
Aunt Judith did not need to be told twice; she practically sprinted back into the ballroom.
Maya thrashed against Mason's grip, her heart pounding a frantic rhythm.
"Let me go!" she screamed.
"You used me!"
Mason pressed his body closer to hers, the sudden proximity sending a dangerous jolt of electricity through her panic.
"I kept you alive," he growled, his face inches from hers.
"If I hadn't walked in here tonight, the Volkovs would have executed this entire wedding party to send a message."
He stared down into her eyes, the chemistry between them suddenly raw and undeniable.
"Your family sold you out, Maya."

As if the universe wanted to prove his point, a deafening gunshot suddenly rang out from inside the ballroom.
