Chapter 8 - The Counter-Strike

David froze in absolute shock as the laser sights of a dozen rifles painted his chest.

I stood up slowly, wiping a trickle of blood from my chin.

I looked at my arrogant son-in-law and allowed myself a grim smile.

I told David that he was right about one thing.

I was a brilliant soldier, which meant I always had a contingency plan.

Before I had left the hospital, I had covertly activated a military distress beacon implanted in my watch.

The Marines hadn't followed my vehicle; they had tracked my biological signature straight to the bunker.

Thorne reached for her weapon, but a Marine sniper shot the gun right out of her hand.

David panicked and grabbed Emily, holding a knife to her throat.

He screamed that if anyone moved, he would kill his own wife.

The Marines held their fire, waiting for my command.

David began backing toward an emergency escape tunnel in the floor.

He dragged Emily with him, her face pale with terror and pain.

I stepped forward, my voice calm and completely devoid of fear.

I reminded David about the words his men had carved into Emily's back.

He lied to you too.

David looked confused for a fraction of a second.

I told him those words weren't meant for Emily.

They were meant for him.

I had never hidden the decryption code in my daughter's mind.

The code I had just spoken into the microphone was actually a catastrophic computer virus.
