Chapter 10 - The Horizon

Three months had passed since the bunker collapsed in the desert.

David and Thorne were locked away in a maximum-security federal penitentiary.

The syndicate had been completely dismantled by military intelligence.

Emily and I were sitting on the wooden deck of a beautiful beachfront cabin in Costa Rica.

The warm ocean breeze carried the scent of salt and blooming hibiscus.

Emily was smiling, her terrible physical and emotional wounds finally healing in the sun.

She was sipping a fruit smoothie, reading a novel, and enjoying the absolute peace.

The military had rewarded my final mission with a generous pension and complete anonymity.

We were officially off the grid, free to live out our days without fear or looking over our shoulders.

I took a deep breath, feeling truly relaxed for the first time in thirty years.

The nightmare was finally over, and my daughter was completely safe.

A polite local waiter approached our table carrying a silver tray with our lunch.

He set a cold glass of iced tea down in front of me with a respectful nod.

He turned and walked away before I could even say thank you.

I reached for the glass, feeling the condensation against my fingers.

Then I noticed the folded white paper napkin resting beneath the drink.

May you like

There were words carefully carved into the thick paper with a razor blade.

It read: HE LIED TO YOU TOO.
