Chapter 7 - The Betrayal

I watched the digital timer on the monitor tick down mercilessly.

Emily banged her fists against the reinforced glass, screaming silently for help.

I dropped my weapon to the floor and raised my hands in defeat.

I told Thorne I would give her the final command sequence to unlock the code.

Thorne smiled triumphantly and slid a microphone across the desk.

I leaned in and spoke the classified phrase I had guarded for twenty years.

The computers in the room instantly lit up with a massive flow of decrypted data.

Thorne had exactly what she needed to cripple the world's financial grids.

She pressed a button, and the glass cell holding Emily hissed as the door unlocked.

I expected Thorne to execute us, but instead, she just laughed.

I turned around to grab my gun from the floor, but a heavy boot stepped on my hand.

David stood over me, holding his pistol aimed squarely at the back of my head.

His terrified, cowardly demeanor vanished, replaced by a look of absolute authority.

He looked at Thorne and praised her for a job well done.

My mind raced as I realized David wasn't a victim in this grand conspiracy.

He was the leader of the rogue syndicate, and he had married Emily solely to get close to me.

David kicked me in the ribs, forcing me onto my knees.

He mocked me, saying I was a brilliant soldier but a terrible judge of character.

Emily stumbled into the command center, clutching her bleeding back.

She saw David holding me at gunpoint and burst into tears of absolute heartbreak.

David ordered Thorne to prepare the helicopter for extraction.

He smiled down at me and said he was going to leave us down here to suffocate.

Then, the massive steel blast doors behind David suddenly groaned and began to open.

A squad of heavily armed United States Marines stormed into the room, leveling their rifles at David.
