Chapter 3 - The Missing Patient

Sergeant Miller told me I had exactly three seconds to surrender the flash drive.

I didn't answer him.

Instead, I kicked open the bathroom window and shoved David out onto the roof.

I laid down suppressing fire through the drywall, forcing Miller’s men to take cover.

I scrambled out the window just as a fragmentation grenade rolled into the bathroom.

The explosion launched David and me off the roof and into the swimming pool below.

We swam to the deep end and waited in the icy water until the flames died down.

When we finally surfaced, the tactical team had already vanished into the woods.

I dragged David out of the pool and shoved him toward my SUV.

I threw him into the passenger seat and sped away from the burning estate.

My priority was getting back to St. Mary's Hospital to secure Emily.

I pulled out my phone and dialed Dr. Mercer’s private number.

It rang five times before he finally answered, his voice shaking violently.

I told him I was five minutes away and that he needed to prepare Emily for immediate transport.

Dr. Mercer let out a desperate, sobbing breath.

He told me he was so sorry.

I slammed the brakes, asking him what the hell he meant.

Mercer confessed that two federal agents had arrived with official transfer orders.

They had threatened to revoke his medical license and arrest him if he interfered.

They had loaded Emily into a private ambulance ten minutes ago.

I demanded to know where they were taking her.

Mercer hesitated, terrified of the consequences of speaking.

Then he whispered the name of a decommissioned military black site in the Nevada desert.

He said the ambulance was headed for the local airfield, but that wasn't the worst part.

Mercer pulled up the hospital security footage on his end.

He told me Emily wasn't unconscious when she left.

She was wide awake, and she was the one holding a gun to the federal agents' heads.
