Chapter 9 - The Sting

I stared completely blankly at Detective Ramirez, entirely paralyzed by the sheer impossibility of her incredible words.

"You actually know about the locked drawer?" I whispered in shock, keeping my hands raised where she could clearly see them.

"I know about absolutely everything, Sarah," Ramirez said calmly, holstering her weapon and signaling the other tense officers to lower theirs.

"Thirty years ago, I was the young rookie cop who unfortunately responded to the 911 call when Linda deliberately drowned her first son."

She opened my heavy car door and gently helped me step out onto the freezing night pavement.

"Linda's immensely wealthy family paid off the corrupt chief of police to make all the solid evidence disappear and declare it a tragic accident," Ramirez explained, her voice thick with utter disgust.

"I've spent my entire, long career quietly trying to build a secret federal case against that horrible family, but I desperately needed hard evidence."

I immediately reached into the heavy diaper bag and pulled out the thick stack of medical files and yellowed newspaper clippings.

"I have it all right here," I said quickly, shoving the important files directly into her waiting hands. "It was safely hidden in Ryan's locked desk."

Ramirez quickly flipped through the fragile documents under the bright glow of the streetlights, a grim, satisfied smile spreading slowly across her face.

"This absolutely proves Ryan knew entirely about her violent history and actively conspired to hide it from you," she said confidently.

"But unfortunately, we still legally need them on tape attempting to physically harm you or the baby tonight to lock them away for life without bail."

"They are heavily armed at the gas station a few miles back, they brutally shot Marcus," I told her frantically, pointing back down the dark highway.

"Marcus is actually one of my best undercover confidential informants; we already dispatched an ambulance and a tactical SWAT team to his exact location," Ramirez assured me gently.

"But Linda and Ryan rapidly fled the bloody scene before we arrived, and we strongly think they headed directly back to your house to destroy the remaining evidence."

Ramirez looked deeply at me with an intense, deadly serious expression that made my blood run cold.

"Sarah, I need you to bravely go back inside that house wearing a hidden wire."

My stomach violently twisted into painful knots at the mere thought of facing those absolute monsters ever again.

"You actually want me to use my helpless baby as bait for those psychos?" I asked angrily, pulling Noah tightly against my chest.

"Absolutely not, Noah will stay right here safely in my armored cruiser with an armed federal guard," Ramirez promised sincerely.

"You just need to walk in there alone, bravely confront them about the stolen files, and get them to specifically admit they want to hurt the baby on tape."

I looked down at my sweet, sleeping son, his tiny chest rising and falling peacefully in the cold night air.

If I didn't do this dangerous task, Linda's immense family wealth would eventually find a legal loophole, and we would spend the rest of our lives looking over our shoulders in fear.

"Okay, I'll do it," I agreed softly, my voice trembling slightly but completely filled with absolute resolve. "Wire me up right now."

Twenty agonizing minutes later, Ramirez's stealthy, unmarked car parked completely silently three houses down from my dark driveway.

I walked slowly up to my own front door, took a massive, shaking deep breath, and pushed it open.

The house was incredibly, eerily silent, the broken shards of wood from the office door still scattered messily across the hallway floor.

"Ryan, are you here?" I called out nervously, stepping slowly into the dark living room.

The bright overhead lights suddenly flicked on, violently blinding me for a split second.

Linda was sitting comfortably in Ryan's favorite armchair, calmly sipping a steaming cup of herbal tea.

"I knew you'd stupidly come back for your pathetic things, you ignorant girl," Linda smirked cruelly, setting her tea down.

I opened my mouth to speak, but the freezing cold metal barrel of a gun was suddenly pressed incredibly hard against the back of my head.

"Where exactly is the baby, Sarah?" Ryan whispered darkly directly into my ear.
