Chapter 7 - No Way Out

The heavy, dented metal door of the gas station bathroom rattled violently as Marcus pounded his massive fist against it.
"Open the door right now, Sarah, we really don't have time for this nonsense!" he yelled aggressively from the other side.
I scrambled quickly backward, pressing my back firmly against the far tiled wall while shielding Noah with my entire body.
"I saw the breaking news, Marcus!" I screamed back, hot tears of sheer desperation streaming heavily down my face.
"I know exactly what you are, and I know Linda explicitly hired you to take my baby away to sell him!"
The aggressive pounding on the door suddenly and completely stopped.
A heavy, incredibly tense silence stretched between us, broken only by the annoying, constant hum of the fluorescent lights above me.
"The news anchor is lying to the public, Sarah," Marcus said, his voice surprisingly calm and steady through the thin metal door.
"Linda’s extremely powerful family literally controls the local media outlets; they entirely fabricated that broadcast to make sure absolutely no one would help you."
"Why on earth should I believe a single word a convicted criminal says?" I cried out, frantically searching the tiny bathroom for anything I could use as a weapon.
"Because if I truly wanted to take your baby, I would have easily done it while you were strapped helplessly in your car at the house," he reasoned logically.
"I am definitely an ex-con, yes, but I served my harsh time for armed robbery ten years ago, not for human trafficking."
I looked desperately up at the small, frosted window located near the ceiling, calculating if I could somehow squeeze myself and Noah through it.
It was way too small for an adult, and it was firmly covered by thick, rusted metal security bars.
"Check the small interior zipper pocket of the diaper bag, the one you grabbed directly from Ryan's desk," Marcus commanded through the door.
I frowned in pure confusion, slowly unzipping the small, hidden compartment I genuinely hadn't checked yet.
Inside the dark pocket, my fingers brushed against a small digital voice recorder hidden carefully among the medical files.
"Play the very last audio file on there," Marcus instructed calmly.
I pressed the small play button, and my husband Ryan’s voice instantly filled the small, echoing bathroom.
"We absolutely need Marcus to intercept her tonight," Ryan’s recorded, panicked voice said clearly through the static.
"My mother is completely out of control, and if she actually gets her hands on Sarah tonight, she’ll definitely kill her and the baby."
I gasped loudly, nearly dropping the small black recorder onto the hard tile floor in utter shock.
"I specifically hired Marcus to safely get you out of town because I couldn't physically stop my crazy mother myself," Ryan’s voice continued sadly on the tape.
"Her rich family explicitly threatened to kill me if I ever tried to take Noah away and expose her."
I stared blankly at the metal door, my entire understanding of the horrific night shifting completely once again.
Ryan wasn't the evil mastermind at all; he was just a terrified coward who had hired a reformed criminal to save us from his own monstrous mother.
I slowly walked forward, my hands shaking, and unlocked the heavy metal door.
Marcus stood there, looking incredibly exhausted and bleeding slightly from his forehead, holding a steaming cup of hot coffee.
"We desperately need to leave right now, the corrupt police are actively tracking your face on the intersection traffic cameras," he said urgently.
I followed him quickly back toward his parked SUV, finally feeling a very tiny, fragile sliver of genuine hope.
As we rapidly approached the truck, the gas station's massive, bright floodlights suddenly shattered completely into a million pieces.
Deafening gunshots rang out rapidly from the darkness, completely shattering the remaining windows of Marcus's black SUV.
"Get down on the ground!" Marcus roared, shoving me and Noah violently but safely onto the cold concrete.

I looked up through the settling darkness and saw Linda stepping elegantly out of a sleek black sedan, holding a massive, scoped hunting rifle.
And standing right next to her, calmly reloading a black pistol, was my husband, Ryan.
