Chapter 10 - The Confession

I froze completely in place, feeling the terrifying, heavy pressure of Ryan's gun pressed firmly against my skull.

"Noah is safe, somewhere you and your insane mother will never find him," I lied boldly, praying the tiny microphone taped to my chest was clearly picking up every single word.

Linda stood up slowly, smoothing down her expensive clothes with an infuriatingly calm and collected grace.

"It really doesn't matter what you say, Ryan, because we'll find him eventually," Linda said confidently, walking toward me with a chilling, wicked smile.

"Just exactly like I easily found a way to successfully purify your annoying, crying brother all those years ago."

"You actually murdered your own helpless baby just because he cried?" I asked loudly, desperately trying to draw out a completely clear confession for the wire.

"I bravely saved him from a truly miserable, painful existence!" Linda shrieked angrily, her composed mask of sanity violently slipping away.

"And I was definitely going to save Noah the exact same way with that bottle of milk today, if you hadn't rudely interfered!"

"And you willingly helped her cover it up all these years, Ryan?" I asked, fighting the angry tears burning hot in my eyes.

"She is my mother, Sarah, and family always protects family no matter what," Ryan stated coldly, slowly cocking the heavy hammer of the gun.

"It's a damn shame you simply didn't understand that rule."

"FBI, drop your weapons right now!" Detective Ramirez’s voice boomed incredibly loudly through a police megaphone right outside the broken front window.

Blinding red and blue lights instantly flooded the dark living room, painting the walls in a chaotic, disorienting strobe of justice.

Ryan panicked completely, his hand shaking violently as he looked nervously toward the bright lights at the window.

In that critical, split second of sheer distraction, I quickly spun around and slapped the heavy gun entirely out of his hand with all my strength.

The metal weapon clattered loudly across the hardwood floor, sliding far directly out of his immediate reach.

Before Ryan could aggressively grab me again, the front door burst completely open and four heavily armed tactical officers swarmed the small room.

They brutally tackled Ryan hard to the ground, aggressively pinning his arms behind his back and loudly snapping heavy steel handcuffs on his wrists.

Linda tried to run frantically toward the kitchen, but Detective Ramirez stepped smoothly into her path and slammed her violently against the drywall.

"Linda Cole, you are officially under arrest for attempted murder, federal conspiracy, and the first-degree homicide of your firstborn son," Ramirez recited firmly, tightly cuffing the screaming, thrashing woman.

I collapsed exhausted onto the couch, sobbing absolutely uncontrollably as the terrifying nightmare finally came to a complete end.

A few long hours later, I was sitting safely at the bright police precinct, holding Noah tightly while Ramirez confirmed that Ryan and Linda were locked permanently in maximum security federal cells with absolutely no bail allowed.

They were both facing life in prison, and thanks entirely to the clear recorded confession, their dirty family’s wealth couldn't save them this time.

Marcus thankfully survived his terrible gunshot wound and rightfully received a full pardon for his vital help in bringing the completely corrupt family down.

A full, peaceful year passed, and Noah and I moved happily to a quiet, sunny little town in Colorado, far away from the horrific memories of Dallas.

We finally had a beautiful, safe new home, a wonderful fresh start, and ultimately, absolute peace of mind.

But early yesterday morning, I walked out cheerfully to check the mail and found a small, unmarked brown envelope sitting quietly inside the box.

I tore it open curiously and pulled out a fresh, high-quality photograph of Noah sleeping peacefully in his brand new crib.

The disturbing picture had clearly been taken from inside my own securely locked house, entirely in the middle of the night.

Flipped onto the back of the photo, written flawlessly in familiar, elegant cursive ink, was a single, terrifying sentence.

"Grandma has a lot of powerful friends."
