Chapter 7 - The Purge

The doors to the boardroom flew open. My head of security, Briggs, walked in, followed by four uniformed police officers.
“Robert Sterling and Marcus Vance,” the lead officer said, pulling out a pair of handcuffs. “You are under arrest for corporate fraud, embezzlement, and conspiracy.”
Robert didn't fight. He looked entirely broken as the officer yanked his arms behind his back. Marcus, however, panicked. He tried to run for the side door, but Briggs grabbed him by the collar, slamming him against the wall before handing him over to the police.
I watched them being dragged out of the room, feeling nothing but cold satisfaction.
Chloe was sobbing hysterically now, crawling toward me on her knees.
“Julian, please! I have nowhere to go! My family is broke, they were counting on this marriage!” she wailed, grabbing my pant leg.
I looked down at her, remembering the night of the gala, the way she had sneered at me and called me a useless cripple.
“You wanted to be rid of a burden, Chloe,” I said softly, stepping back so her hands fell to the floor. “Congratulations. You’re free.”
I looked at Briggs. “Escort Miss Chloe out of the building. Make sure she doesn't take anything that belongs to me. Not even a pen.”
As Briggs dragged a screaming, thrashing Chloe out of the boardroom, I turned back to the remaining board members. They were staring at me with a mixture of awe and absolute terror.

I walked over to the head of the table, pulled out the high-backed leather chair, and sat down.
“Now,” I said, steepling my fingers. “Let’s get back to business.”
