Chapter 6 - The Miracle
I pushed my hands down on the armrests of the wheelchair. I engaged my core. I planted my feet firmly on the plush carpet.
And I stood up.
The reaction was instantaneous chaos.
A female board member let out a piercing shriek. Two executives knocked their chairs backward in shock. Robert’s face turned the color of wet ash. Marcus dropped his pen, his jaw unhinged.
I stood at my full height of six-foot-two, smoothing down the lapels of my tailored suit. I took a slow, deliberate step forward, then another, walking with perfect, powerful strides toward the head of the table.
“It’s a miracle,” I said dryly, staring directly into Robert’s terrified eyes.
“Julian…” Robert stammered, raising a trembling hand. “How… the doctors said…”
“The doctors are on my payroll, Robert,” I said, stopping at the edge of the table. “I wanted to see exactly how fast my family would plunge the knife into my back if they thought I couldn't fight back. You broke all records.”
I turned to Vance. “Pass out the folders.”
Vance stepped forward, dropping thick, black binders in front of every board member.
“What is this?” Marcus whispered, his voice cracking.
“That is the paper trail of the offshore shell company you and Robert set up in the Cayman Islands,” I said coldly. “Along with the wire transfers showing you embezzled four million dollars from the corporate pension fund to finance it over the last six months.”
The boardroom erupted into furious shouts. The executives who had been ready to hand Robert the company were now glaring at him with pure hatred.
I turned slowly to Chloe. She was pressed against the glass wall, shaking violently.

“Julian, I didn't know!” she cried, tears streaming down her perfect makeup. “Robert manipulated me! I love you!”
“You love Marcus, apparently,” I said, pulling a stack of printed emails from my inside pocket and tossing them at her feet. “And you love the idea of buying a yacht with my money. The engagement is over, Chloe. You get nothing.”
