Chapter 9 - The Sacrifice

The deafening boom of the shotgun echoed like thunder inside the metal warehouse.

Derek's body jerked violently backward as the buckshot tore into his shoulder.

He collapsed onto the concrete floor, clutching his bleeding arm, but he did not fall away from Sarah.

He remained positioned directly between his wife and Silas Thorne.

"Derek!" Sarah screamed, dropping to her knees beside him in the glowing beam of the flashlight.

Seeing my son-in-law take a bullet for my daughter ignited a terrifying rage inside my soul.

I did not fire the stolen rifle from behind cover.

I stood up, stepped into the beam of light, and charged directly at Thorne.

Thorne hurriedly pumped the shotgun, desperately trying to chamber another shell.

He was too slow.

I slammed the heavy stock of the automatic rifle directly into his face, shattering his nose instantly.

Thorne stumbled backward, dropping the flashlight and the shotgun as blood poured down his chin.

I grabbed him by the lapels of his expensive suit and threw him brutally against the steel support beam.

The remaining guards hesitated, clearly unsure if they should fire and risk hitting their boss.

"Drop your weapons right now!" I roared at the top of my lungs.

"If anyone moves a single muscle, I will snap his neck!"

To emphasize my point, I pressed my forearm against Thorne's throat, applying lethal pressure.

The guards slowly lowered their rifles, unwilling to die for a boss who was currently gasping for air.

In the distance, the wailing sound of multiple police sirens pierced the night air.

Thorne gagged, trying to pry my arm away from his crushed windpipe.

"The cops are coming," Thorne choked out, smiling a bloody, arrogant smile.

"My lawyers will have me out on bail before the sun comes up."

I leaned in close, staring into the eyes of a man who thought he was completely untouchable.

"You are not going to a holding cell, Silas," I whispered coldly.

"You are going to a federal penitentiary."

I reached into my pocket and pulled out the small, blinking audio recorder I had activated when I entered the warehouse.

It had perfectly captured his confession of kidnapping, extortion, and attempted murder.

Thorne's arrogant smile completely vanished as he realized his empire was utterly destroyed.

Suddenly, Derek let out a weak groan from the floor, his face turning incredibly pale as he lost blood.

Sarah looked up at me with panicked eyes, clutching her stomach tightly.

May you like

"Dad," she gasped, her breathing turning shallow and rapid.

"My water just broke."
